Stanwell Fields Curriculum Intent
Throughout the school, our work is based on principles which are shared by all staff. It is our belief that we should:
-
develop and value the whole child and enable them to flourish as individuals.
-
give children the opportunity to learn about the wider world and their place within it.
-
ensure children have the knowledge and skills needed to achieve during the next stage of their education and in the future.
-
give children the opportunity to enjoy learning, flourish and achieve in a peaceful, supportive environment of Christian love and care and build respectful relationships.

Computing: Purpose of Study
A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
Computing: Aims
The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
- can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
- can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
- can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
- are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology
We follow the National Curriculum for Computing. The programmes of study for key stage one and two can be found below:
Computing at Stanwell Fields
All children in Y1-6 complete units of learning each half term in Computing. We follow the national curriculum for computing, and our year group overviews and plans use Purple Mash resources as a basis. We have adapted lessons and activities to suit the needs of our children and school. We believe in giving all children the opportunity to reason, apply and develop skills, and use technology to solve problems regularly in computing lessons, and we ensure work is differentiated to suit the needs of individual or groups of children so our lessons are inclusive.
We have integrated online safety into our teaching so that children are taught about and regularly reminded about this important area of their lives as they grow into confident users of the online world.
You can find out more about the learning each half term in our half termly class newsletters and from the curriculum plan below, in which you will find an overview for the teaching of computing in each year group. Please note that teachers may adapt this over the course of each term or the year in order to meet the needs of their class.
